Benton Family Archives - Jesse Benton Will Probate 1837-1859 - Updated 5-20-2007

JESSE BENTON (g-g-g-g-Grandfather of Lori J. [Hunt] Zierden)
Note:  As you read through these documents you will see that guardianship of the minor children was assigned to Samuel Brasher.  It is my belief that although Barnissa (mother of the children) was still alive and living with her children, that women could not be given control to handle the financial affairs of minor children in this era.
Document:  Probate documents pertaining to the Will/Probate of Jesse Benton, dec'd in 1843. Documents cover years from 1837-1859.
Copies obtained from the Shelby County Historical Society, Inc, Museum & Archives, Columbiana, AL
Source Documentation:  Shelby County Alabama, Probate Estate Files Index 1818-1915; Shelby County Estate Case Files; Drawer 5, Packet 0007; Box 1, Folder 93 of 97; Jesse James Benton (1839-1858); Also see James Brasher; Drawer 30-A; Packet 0074

Former Citizen of St. Charles and Descendant of Pioneer Family of This Section.
    Oct. 22, 1917
John B. thro receiped(sic) a letter this morning informing him of the death of Mr. L. A. LeFaivre, who died Mon- day in Branson, Mo., and who was 82 years old last March. Mr. LeFaivre was well known to older citizens of St. Charles and was a brother of the late Frank LeFaivre. the deceased was deputy county collector here under the late Henry Kemper and also under Gus Fredrich when they held that office. He was a most pleasant gen- tleman and his friends remember the pleasant days they spent together.
The grandfather of Mr. LeFaivre came to this county before 1800 and he built the first house in what is now the pretty little city of Portage des Sioux and later moved to St. Charles.
The mother of the deceased was a daughter of the late Louis Barada who moved to St. Charles from St. Louis in 1800 and the Barada home was located on Second and Franklin streets on the northeast corner where Dallmeyer's new undertaking parlors are now situated, which place later became the LeFaivre home.
This family were among the first settlers in this section of the country when this territory was then a wilder- ness, and figured prominently in the upbuilding of what is now the best section of the country. Early history contains the names of both the Le- Faivres and Baradas in the pioneer days.
